Adelaide Central School of Art is delighted to present Shedding, a new solo exhibition by 2023 SALA feature artist Helen Fuller. This esoteric survey show has been staged to coincide with the publication of a new monograph dedicated to the artist’s prolific, multifaceted practice.

I recently did a eight week course on abstract art though Adelaide Art Classes. It was brilliant! The instructor Joe led us through different techniques and styles within the abstract school, starting with sketching and moving onto collage work and oil panting. His advice and teachings were invaluable and changed my whole outlook on not just the creation of art but also taught me how to alter my traditional thought patterns and add innovation and problem solving to other aspects of my life. The course was structured yet we had the freedom to explore and create in ways individual to our taste and interest. Joe gave us activities and advice on what we were doing but always left a lot of space for us to develop our creativity. He showed us the work of prominent abstract artists to support his teachings which I found really helpful. Teacher and director Peter Bok encourages an investigative approach to problem solving and concept development that underpins the lesson program at every level.

Small intimate student groups ensure dedicated teacher attention from Peter Bok inspiring achievement and progress. Flexible course structure allows students to explore a range of techniques appropriate to their needs.

Peter has been a practising artist since the 1980s. Over the years he has established himself as a significant award winning painter, draftsman and arts educator in Adelaide. Studying at the Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam, he was taught traditional portrait painting by Herman Gordijn, the royal portraitist, along side the Post Modern Conceptualists and the Neo-Expressionists. It was his interest in the latter that took him to Berlin in 1984 after graduating from the Rietveld. In Berlin, his exposure to the Neue Wilde such as Fetting and Salome, was to greatly influence his bold painting style. In the early 1990s' his work saw a significant shift into a disciplined hard-edged geometric abstraction.

Bapëa Art School features two exhibitions annually in the informal pop-up setting of the customized residence of the school’s principal lecturer and in the school’s painting studio. One is held during the Fringe Festival in March and the other during the SALA Festival in August. The venue is of modest and intimate proportions encouraging visitors to engage in open and stimulating discussion with artists in a welcoming environment.

Are awarded annually to expand opportunities for South Australian Youth to explore an interest in a career in visual arts specifically in the area of painting.

Scholarships are tenable for 12 months and awarded on the basis of a written application, a folio of prescribed work and an interview.

Selection criteria include artistic merit, commitment to visual arts practice, community engagement and financial need and/or other hardship.
